LinuxMint is now the King of Linux Distros, Finally!

 There is a fresh mint(ed) flavor on LinuxMint now. In the last one month, it has scaled the distro charts and is now the number one distro for opensource users. Distrowatch, the unofficial platform for all Linux distros, shows that LinuxMint has been has had the maximum number of hits in the past few weeks to become the most popular distros today.distrowatch-Nov
This meteoric rise is largely due to two factors-usability and functionality. It is but natural to assume LinuxMint to be a spin-off of the ever-popular Ubuntu distro.
LinuxMint is surprisingly the brainchild of Clement Lefebvre and a continued source of inspiration to, the now, millions of its users.
Mint has been able to build its user base largely to the intuitive and clear interpretation of community’s needs by Lefebvre.
Lefebvre himself admits that brilliant input from the community itself becomes the basis for the upcoming release.
As the project leader and the decision-maker that he is, Lefebvre has proved to be the visionary leader as well as he contributes to the ‘bigger features’ and allows for the development of Software Manger, Upload Manager etc. The bottom line however is that quality is more important, than delivering on schedule. Hence, largely schedules are not announced until new updates achieve the desired quality standards.
In retrospect, as users, this is a feature that has largely contributed to the success of LinuxMint for the desktop, especially during the last few months.
First, LinuxMint always has features that users like to use. There are not too many features, forced on them, until they elect it remain or propose be included.
This high-level of user-chosen features, coupled with some tight development and consistent quality only adds to user experience.
Contrast this to what suddenly happened at Ubuntu. Ubuntu, with a large business/corporate user base too, all of sudden decided to upgrade technologies and out-of-the-blue came Unity the desktop that brought tablet/mobile user patterns to the yet largely desktop-user Ubuntu community.
The rather arbitrary manner in which Unity, with its host of unfamiliar features, failed to provide what the user community needed, did lead to a loss of faith. Users found new faith in the familiar with LinuxMint as it continued to offer what was good Gnome 2.3 desktop. The same story was repeated with the entry of the sudden overhaul Gnome underwent to reach Gnome 3. The changes within the Linux 3.0 kernel in some ways too contributed to Ubuntu’s loss of popularity.
Where earlier LinuxMint had its loyal set of users, all of a sudden, in the months after Unity and Gnome 3’s debut, there was a sudden deluge in the number of users rising upto a growth almost doubled (40% more users).
LinuxMint is everything Ubuntu should have been. Instead Ubuntu is today, perhaps grown beyond community-user needs and looks towards enterprise services.
This has definitely left a lot of room for true open source philosophy to emerge, through meaningful distros like LinuxMint.
Shall we say with conviction, that today, LinuxMint is the Linux Success story that Ubuntu failed to be!

  LinuxMint Vs Ubuntu: A Growth Analysis

When Linux Mint fans trumpeted that it was the most downloaded Linux distro in recent years, the distro was throwing itself open to debate on the ways and mechanisms by which it became the most downloaded or most viewed distro on opensource platform watchdog-Distrowatch.
Linux Mint 11 and now Linux Mint 12 are great versions that have grown in usage, thanks to the continuity, its founder developer Clement Lefebvre offers for Gnome users. While Ubuntu, backed by Canonical’s steady but firm vision of moving towards a ‘touch-based user experience’ for Ubuntu, continued with Unity desktop as default, Linux Mint proved to be a ‘fresh Mint of Gnome’ as it offered what Ubuntu users yearned for- the ultimate, satisfying experience of Gnome platform.
Statistics are being paraded and justifications are being made on how and why, Linux Mint is the uncrowned king of Linux and how Ubuntu is losing ground as the most favored distro, thanks to the unacceptable action of replacing charming Gnome with unnecessary Unity.
The first ‘statistics’ that set the entire debate rolling was a couple of months ago, when Linux Mint became the most searched and read distro on ‘distrowatch’ the industry log expert that lists open source distros and offers live accounts on which is the most downloaded/viewed distro.
While it can be expected that enthusiastic Linux Mint fans used it to reiterate the growing depth of their distro, it did not in any way indicate that it was a better distro in terms of performance or downloads.
Now, Distrowatch display continues to rank Linux Mint way ahead on the distro link, Ferram Roberto from lffl opens up the debate some more.

The chart, plotting Ubuntu’s popularity from 2004 onwards records that there was a massive surge in Oct 2007 when Ubuntu 8.04 was launched. This popularity is retained with a few dips and rises until April of 2011, when Ubuntu 11.04 Natty Narwhal debuted with Unity in tow. The graph then shows a steady decline in users searching for Ubuntu.
The chart for Linux Mint, 2004 onwards is a steady increase that sees a massive spike in users looking for Linux Mint information, news was in Nov 2011.
Ferram Roberto and other passionate ubuntu users claim that the number of clicks on Linux Mint increased on the website, thanks largely to an active community that back-linked all posts to the distrowatch website. Roberto interprets the fall in Ubuntu’s most-searched ranking on Google was due to introduction of ‘Unity’ and not due to the ascendency of any other distro.
Clement Lefebvre has already demonstrated his commitment to user community and open source philosophy by developing what users want and not what business intelligence dictates. Again, his fork and development of Cinnamon gives a whole new dimension and direction to where Gnome can reach. Linux platform should not be limited by internal conflict on ‘best distro’ status between Unity users and Gnome users.

The first release of the KDE 4.8 series of Chakra has been released , codename Archimedes, Chakra GNU/Linux featuring Linux 3.2 and KDE 4.8. With this release KDE is updated to 4.8.0, kernel to Linux 3.2.2. A new theme, Ronak is introduced. Updated Qt, boost, subversion, phonon packages, libxcb stack to name a few of the newer base packages included. A switch to GRUB2 has been decided on, to be more compatible with any other Operating System.
Chakra is now offering a DVD and CD version. The CD version gets you to a minimal working KDE desktop, with only a text-editor, file-manager, web-browser and a simple media player installed, no further apps, no language packs. The DVD version includes all the language packs, most of standard KDE apps, libre-office 3.4.5, amarok, kde-telepathy, spideroak , printer support, minitube, k3b to name a few.
With this release we offer:
- KDE 4.8.0
- Linux 3.2.2 (2.6.35.14 optional)
- Qt 4.8
- DVD image, including all locales and a nice selections of apps
- minimal CD image you can build your desktop on

Part 2- How to install mysql-connector-c++ in Windows | Mac | SunOS | RHEL-Red Hat/Fedora Linux?

Source Installation

The MySQL Connector/C++ is based on the MySQL client libary (MySQL C API). Connector C/C++ is linked against the MySQL client library. You need to have the MySQL client library installed in order to compile the Connector/C++.
You also need to have the cross-platform build tool CMake 2.6.2 or newer. Check the README file for platform specific notes on Windows and SunOS.
Typically the MySQL client library gets installed by installing the MySQL Server. However, check your operating system documentation for other installation options. Please note also, that MySQL provides downloads for certain platforms which contain no more than the required client library. It is a common mistake, in particular on Windows, to mix header files and binaries from different MySQL client libraries. Of course, this will cause issues.

1. Run CMake to build a Makefile

[edit] Building on Windows

The basic steps for building the driver on Windows are the same as on Unix: use CMake 2.6.2 or newer to generate build files for your compiler and compile the driver using your compiler.
We are sorry but we cannot formally support other compilers than Microsoft Visual Studio 2003 and above.
Thanks to CMake it is easy for you to try out other compilers. However, you may experience compile warnings, compile errors or linking issues not detected by Visual Studio. We appreciate your patches to fix any of them.
Consult the CMake manual or check cmake --help to find out which build systems are supported by your CMake version.

It is likely that your cmake binary will support more compilers ("generators") than supported by MySQL Connector/C++. We have built the driver using the following generators:

  • NMake

All distributions contain a README file. At the end of the README file contained in a binary distribution you will find the settings used to build the binaries.

Connecting to MySQL

A connection to MySQL is established by retrieving an instance of sql::Connection from a sql::mysql::MySQL_Driver object. A sql::mysql::MySQL_Driver object is returned by sql::mysql::MySQL_Driver::get_mysql_driver_instance().

Make sure that you free the sql::Connection object as soon as you do not need it any more. But do not explicitly free the driver object!

For running simple queries you can use the methods sql::Statement::execute(), sql::Statement::executeQuery() and sql::Statement::executeUpdate(). sql::Statement::execute() should be used if your query does not return a result set or if your query returns more than one result set. See the examples/ directory for more on this.

The API for fetching result sets is identical for (simple) statments and prepared statements. If your query returns one result set you should use sql::Statement::executeQuery() or sql::PreparedStatement::executeQuery() to run your query. Both methods return sql::ResultSet objects. The preview version does buffer all result sets on the client to support cursors.

If you are not familiar with Prepared Statements on MySQL have an extra look at the source code comments and explanations in the file examples/prepared_statement.cpp!
sql::PreparedStatement is created by passing a SQL query to sql::Connection::prepareStatement(). As sql::PreparedStatement is derived from sql::Statement, you will feel familiar with the API once you have learned how to use (simple) statements (sql::Statement). For example, the syntax for fetching results is identical.

  • Added Driver::threadInit() and Driver::threadEnd() methods. Every thread of a threaded client must call Driver::threadInit() at the very start of the thread before it does anything else with Connector/C++ and every thread must call Driver::threadEnd() when it finishes. You can find an example demonstrating the use in examples/pthreads.cpp. It is strongly discouraged to share connections between threads. It is theoretically possible, if you set certain (undocumented) mutexes, but it is not supported at all. Use one connection per thread. Do not have two threads using the same connection at the same time. Please check the C API notes on threading on the MySQL manual. Connector/C++ wraps the C API. (Lawrin, Andrey, Ulf)

  • Fixed http://bugs.mysql.com/bug.php?id=45048 "prepared statements corrupt the heap". ResultBind is back in the prepared statement, but shared with the result set. (Andrey)
  • get_driver_instance() is only available in dynamic library builds, static builds won't have this symbol. This is done, because someone might decided to load the dll with LoadLibrary/dlopen and needs an entry point to start using the library (some kind of a Driver Manager). For those, who don't use cmake for building you need to define mysqlcppconn_EXPORTS if you are loading dynamically and want to use that entry point. (Andrey)
  • ABI change - added support for optional run-time dynamic loading of the MySQL Client Library. This is useful if you want to re-distribute a certain client library with the connector and make sure that it gets used. It also allows you to use a different client library for every connection. As it is an advanced feature it is not enabled by default. By default the MySQL Client Library will be linked at compile time just as in every version before.
  • Fixed bug in ResultSetMetaData for normal statements and prepared ones, getScale() and getPrecision() did return wrong results. (Andrey)

  • Fixed a bug in PS, which in combination of preparing a stored procedures without any parameters was leading to exception, which was a problem, and was leading to another problem which manifested itself with double free. All similar code snippets in the Connector were fixed. (Andrey)
  • The driver makes use of some Boost components (http://www.boost.org). You need to have Boost 1.34.0 or newer installed on your system in order to compile the driver from source. Binary distributions have no additional dependencies over 1.0.5.

  • Changed the interface of sql::ConnectionMetaData, sql::ResultSetMetaData and sql::ParameterMetaData to have a protected destructor. In this way the client code doesn't need, and won't be able, to destruct the metadata objects returned by the connector. The connector will handle their destruction. mysql_driver.h (if you want to get your connections from the driver instead of instantiating a MySQL_Connection object. This makes your code pretty portable against the common interface)
mysql_connection.h - If you intend to link directly to the MySQL_Connection class and use its specifics not found in sql::Connection
However, you can make your application fully abstract by not using the two headers above but the generic headers.
  • sql::mysql::MySQL_SQLException is gone. There is no distinction between server and client (= Connector) caused errors based on the type of the exception. However, you can still check the error code to figure out the reason.

  • Adapt STL (suggest details, if you can)
  • Please consider C++ references for Statements, ResultSets, and exceptions, instead of pointers to heap memory. Considering the possible exceptions, it quickly becomes a hassle to ensure that everything is freed correctly. I think C++ programmers are accustomed to the compiler doing all of that for them.
